Kevin Costner has only directed five films in 35 years, all Westerns or Western-adjacent, and he’s financed them heavily from his own pocket. But in the early ’90s, he nearly broke that mold — by trying to direct and star in Schindler’s List.

Costner pitched himself to Steven Spielberg, even offering a screen test in a bald cap in Spielberg’s kitchen. Spielberg declined, choosing to direct it himself and cast Liam Neeson — a decision that led to one of the most powerful films of the 20th century.

Costner later admitted, “I wasn’t the right guy.” Thankfully, Spielberg knew that too.
